“St. Eustatius: Restoring Our Ties – The voices of Statians making a difference”

In 2021, the remains of a historic burial ground for enslaved Afrikans were excavated in St. Eustatius, a Caribbean island with a population of 3,500. Protests erupted from those whose ancestors were buried there. An investigation was launched, which revealed that both the archaeological team and the government had made serious mistakes, particularly in terms of not involving the St. Eustatius community. They were purposefully not informed because problems were expected.
This book gives the population a voice and presents findings from a study of their thoughts and feelings about ancestors, identity, commemoration, and the reburial process. As of the time of writing, there has been no announcement about where or when the reburial will take place.
